Contextual digital marketing refers to online digital marketing that targets consumers based upon keywords used by the consumer in web-browsing.  The goal of this technique is to push specific content- based ads to a specifically identified consumer based upon pre-existing criteria, such as utilizing a specific word in an online search.

 

Example:

A consumer does an internet search for all the newest smartphones.  Afterward, they go to the site where they read their daily news, and ads for the newest smartphones show up along-side the news articles. The keyword this technology hones in on is "smartphone".
